Key Differentiators

Our 1st key differentiator is that we are focused on large-scale displacement of fossil fuels.

We appreciate that the scale of new power generation, which is needed from renewables, is so great, that the area-efficiency and resource-efficiency of every viable renewable energy technology are going to become factors that are just as important as cost has been historically. Moreover, we do not agree that "every little bit helps". It doesn't. In fact, very few renewable technologies can become sustainable and have the potential to scale to levels that can meet a significant fraction of our total energy needs. This is because renewable energy is very diffuse and the underlying technology often depends on resources that are intrinsically rare or very hard to extract from the Earth.

Our 2nd key differentiator is that we are innovating on the financing and development of power plants.

In this regard, XE has developed a new model for how to finance and build-out gigawatt scale solar power plants. Using our method it is possible to dramatically extend the life of a solar power plant and to increase its Energy Returned On Energy Invested (EROEI) ratio asymptotically, over several decades, towards an factor of around 100:1, which is close to the levels achieved from oil exploitation in the 1940s! Compare that to the EROEI ratio of today's oil industry of between 10:1 to 15:1, which is a strong function of the difficulty of extraction.

Our 3rd key differentiator is that we do extensive in-house innovation to achieve our goals.

Even though we are an early stage company we have a proven capacity to innovate in house with a solid and growing patent portfolio that protects our inventions both nationally and internationally. This internal development has led to "XE-CPV", one of the most area-efficient and resource-efficient of all renewable technologies. When complete, XE-CPV will combine several innovations in low loss solar concentrators, flat, low-profile, solar trackers, solar cells and built-in energy storage. Our power plants will be able to displace fossil fuel plants as a source of baseload electricity.

Our 4th key differentiator is that we have established key strategic relationships.

As a small start-up company in Silicon Valley XE knows we can't do everything alone. Great strategic partners are the key to success. We have already executed Technology Collaboration and Licensing agreements with great partners like Hewlett Packard and Oregon State University and we are continuing to develop partnerships with strategic companies and institutions.
