Electric Utilities
XE is changing the way solar power plants are designed, financed, developed, and sustained, to make it feasible for solar energy to meet a significant fraction of our total energy needs. Our approach, called XE-CPV, involves improving the efficiency of the solar panels, extending the plant’s expected lifetime, and the boosting the plant’s energy return on energy invested (EROEI) ratio. Using our approach, EROEI grows to approximately 10:1 in 10 years and asymptotes to approximately 100:1 over several decades thereafter.
XE plans on selling electricity generated by XE-CPV solar power plants to utilities under Power Purchase Agreements. In addition, we will install custom solar power plants for utilities if they wish to operate the plants themselves.
XE-CPV power plants will be quite unlike all other solar farms. XE-CPV is expected to generate electricity at a price point comparable to that of thin film solar farms but using a much smaller footprint of land. XE-CPV will deliver the highest energy return per unit area of any renewable generation technology, in fact, minimizing the area of land needed to be devoted to renewable power generation. XE-CPV power plants will have very low visual impact when viewed from ground level, by replacing traditional 2-axis mechanical trackers with our proprietary flat, low-profile, electronic eTrackers, thereby making it easier to obtain planning permission for the development. Moreover, the flat low-profile nature of the panels allows us to deploy XE-CPV in more windy locations than is possible for traditional CPV. And the flat panels can be kept clean using autonomous robots rather than teams of workers, thereby maintaining peak operating performance at low cost. XE is also working on a proprietary energy storage technology that we intend to integrate into our panels. If successful, this will allow us to construct a solar power plant that can provide a baseload supply of electricity.
